Math Performance is High Stakes in China

Standard

In a recent Globe and Mail Article which is part of a series looking and math performance of students in our schools there are some interesting observations made on the high pressure education system in China.  I found it is interesting that Shanghai schools  are adopting more Western methods due to the high pressure on students. On the other hand they really up the stakes for all involved stakeholders as mandatory extensive training for teachers and job security are connected to student scores.  Having been to China and seen the high schools lists of students ranked on the schools front doors.  I also saw students in July studying until 10 pm at night in study classes  in preparation for entrance exams to college.   It is pretty hard to compete with such focus and commitment of time.  As the article notes culture plays a pretty big role in the success but also there is more to it than just drill.
